Different jobs
Classic SEO tries to earn a visible rank in Google or Bing and a click through to the site.
GEO tries to be named in a generated answer, with the company, offering, and location stated correctly. The user may never open ten links.
What they share — and what they do not
They share clear URLs, titles, body structure, internal links, crawlable HTML, and one consistent entity file.
They do not share link-stuffing as a ranking tactic, or writing a keyword three times in a title. Models are more likely to extract paragraphs with definitions, boundaries, and evidence.
Split the metrics
SEO still watches impressions, clicks, and conversions. Those numbers do not prove you appear in AI answers.
GEO needs a question set: ask real queries on target engines, and record presence, accuracy, and who occupies the slot. That ruler is used in the audit and in later tracking.
What to fix first
If the site contradicts itself, names differ across languages, or services have no URL, fix the entity and the source of record first. Both SEO and GEO benefit.
If the site is crawlable but question tests never return your name, shift to citation-ready content and authority sources — not another stack of keyword pages.
Questions this page answers
How is GEO different from SEO?
SEO optimizes rankings and clicks on result pages. GEO optimizes whether generative engines mention you, and whether they are correct.
Can you do GEO without SEO?
Not well. Without a crawlable site, GEO lacks citation material. Keyword pages without entities and sources will not stay in the answer.
